CRNA Schools in New Jersey: Rutgers Requirements, Costs and Options

Among CRNA schools in New Jersey, there's one accredited entry-to-practice program: Rutgers School of Nursing's Doctor of Nursing Practice in Nurse Anesthesia, based in Newark. It's a 36-month, full-time, 85-credit program. You'll also see New Jersey hospitals that host students from other universities. Those are clinical sites, and they aren't necessarily another New Jersey degree program.

With one in-state option, your real questions are whether Rutgers fits your experience, application calendar and budget, and which nearby programs belong on your shortlist with it.

The curriculum that takes effect summer 2027 describes a first year of didactic study, then a gradual move into the clinical specialty phase while didactic work continues. That doesn't mean the program is online. It also doesn't promise you can schedule every week around an RN job.

What are Rutgers' admission requirements?

Rutgers wants a nursing bachelor's, current full-time critical-care experience at application, CCRN with your application and RN licenses in two states by your second semester. The details:

Read the GPA wording closely. Rutgers calls 3.2 a preferred GPA, not a hard cutoff, and it counts your prior associate-degree and other undergraduate work. If your GPA sits near that preference, ask admissions how it looks at your complete undergraduate record.

Experience timing deserves the same attention. Picture a nurse with 16 months of ICU work at an August application deadline (an eligibility illustration, not an admission prediction). Reaching 18 months before May enrollment won't satisfy a rule that's measured at application. Ask whether orientation, employment gaps or a switch to part-time work change how the school counts your time.

Does Rutgers accept PICU, NICU or emergency experience?

PICU, yes. NICU and emergency, no. Rutgers lists PICU among its preferred critical-care areas, alongside surgical, cardiothoracic, neurosurgical, burn and medical ICUs, and it explicitly excludes NICU and emergency-department experience. PACU experience generally isn't considered, but the policy allows it when the care is comparable to other ICUs.

That PACU provision is an individual review, so it won't cover every PACU role. The school expects you to show proficiency with critically ill patients, mechanical ventilation, invasive hemodynamic monitoring, vasoactive infusions and aggressive fluid management. Are extra prerequisite courses or shadowing required?

No separate course sequence, but shadowing counts. Rutgers' anesthesia admission requirements don't set out a chemistry or statistics prerequisite sequence. They do ask for a CV that includes your CRNA shadowing information, along with the dates of all your critical care and other nursing experience, so shadowing belongs on your plan even without a published hour count. Ask admissions about any course you're unsure of before you pay for it.

When are Rutgers CRNA applications due?

Rutgers publishes an application window of May 15 to August 15 for May admission. Its instructions also say every component has to be submitted before August 15 and that only complete applications will be considered. So plan around that "before" wording, and don't count on a last-day upload.

Get your transcripts, licenses, certifications and two critical-care leadership references moving early. The current supplementary materials include a one-page statement about a significant challenge and a separate one-page writing sample about a distinctive skill or background. Selected applicants also complete an interview-stage supplemental application and knowledge assessments. Write to the exact current prompts. A generic statement you wrote for another school won't fit them.

How much does CRNA school at Rutgers cost?

Rutgers charges by the credit, and its official 2026-2027 School of Nursing schedule lists different resident and nonresident rates for the post-BSN DNP:

At the published per-credit rates, an illustrative 12-credit semester would come to $14,172 resident tuition or $20,748 nonresident tuition, before fees. That's a math example. It isn't a quote for any specific semester of the nurse anesthesia curriculum.

You could multiply current rates across all 85 credits, but that assumes future-year rates and your residency classification never change. Rutgers says it reviews tuition and fees annually, so get a term-by-term estimate for your entering cohort. Ask which fees apply to each clinical and academic term. Then budget separately for books, equipment, licensure in both states, clinical travel, living costs and forgone RN income.

Moving to New Jersey doesn't by itself make you eligible for resident tuition. Ask the university how your situation is classified before you compare Rutgers with a private university's price.

Where will you attend classes and clinical training?

Classes are based at the Newark health-sciences campus in the published 2027 plan, and the admissions process includes on-campus interviews. Clinical education is a big piece of the program (the overview lists 2,800 clinical hours). And needing both New Jersey and New York licenses before the second semester is one more practical thing to plan for.

They show three graduating classes side by side, with first-attempt and eventual passes for each. Rutgers publishes cohort-level results, and those tell you more than any single overall percentage:

Which nearby programs should New Jersey applicants compare?
